JAM MUSIC LAB is the first music university, which is holistically specialised in Jazz and Popular Music. We extend the great tradition of classical music education in Austria by means of contemporary styles in Jazz, Pop and Rock, and thus, navigate towards international excellence. An innovative setup of curricula interactively combines teaching, professional practice and research, and furthermore, focuses on the requirements of the current music market.
JAM MUSIC LAB was founded in 2011 as a private music conservatory with recognition as a public education institution. It has developed into one of the leading domestic institutions for professional music education in the areas of Jazz and Popular Music. At its 38th meeting on December 13, 2016, the Agency for Quality Assurance and Accreditation Austria (AQ Austria) decided to grant approval for JAM MUSIC LAB’s application for accreditation as a private university, which had been submitted in autumn 2015. On January 23, 2017, the decision was approved by the Federal Minister for Science, Research and Economy. The decision has been in implementation since February 2, 2017. In its 2017/18 winter semester, which begins on September 1, 2017, JAM MUSIC LAB GmbH starts operating as a private university.
Our offer of diploma studies in the conservatory continues to operate in parallel.

The university offers a practically orientated music education for future musicians, music teachers and music producers, who shall be able to compete with international standards.
It is one of the important aims of the mission statement to not only be satisfied with excellency in the context of teaching, but also to be able to support the career entry of the students and to reach top ratings in terms of the employability of its graduates. As the first institute of its kind, JAM MUSIC LAB offers committed work experience opportunities, which are systematically integrated into the curriculum.
To ensure that this goal is reached, it is an important strategy to work on the various necessary aspects and abilities required to work as a musician, but also to support the individual strengths and talents of the students. Furthermore, we focus on developing a strong sense of professionalism during the course of their work experience. JAM MUSIC LAB graduates therefore possess greater advantages over their competitors: parallel to their individual developments as young artists, they also have the opportunity to experience and engage with work-related challenges that may arise in such a competitive market. Based on these experiences, they are able to plan an appropriate start and focus on their careers.
I am glad that I finally took their advice and applied myself to the musical studies. At Jam Music Lab, I felt comfortable right from the start – supported and understood. What I appreciate the most is the enjoyable but still target-oriented atmosphere in the courses and among the students themselves. Instead of constantly competing with one another, students profit from each other – make music together. Little by little new formations develop, students actively support each other by visiting gigs, going to sessions together… almost like in a small family. And this is exactly what I personally find most important to open myself up and make progress – to feel comfortable. I am already looking forward to many more hours, projects and concerts together.
I also play the 3-string sanxian and the piano professionally. It has been my dream to come to Vienna and study music for quite a long time. Now I am studying theory/arrangement/composition at JAM MUSIC LAB and am fascinated. I get to meet musicians from all over the world and can implement my ideas into practice.
That is why I decided to study composition. There are many decisions in life, which are governed by their reason, others are emotional. Studying music was a purely emotional decision for me. Choosing the field of study and the institution was on the other hand a rational decision. It therefore was not a coincidence, that I ended up studying at JAM Music Lab. The curriculum and the surrounding were very important for my decision. It is not possible to predict how the studies could develop at an institution like Jam Music Lab in advance. But after three years of studying at JAM I can say, that I am happy and content with my decision. The professional attitude of the lecturers, which are all active musicians themselves, the friendly climate with a prominent level of reflection provides the ideal conditions to realize my dream and my passion to Jazz. I can therefore recommend studying at JAM Music Lab even to people my age in addition of after their professional career.
I still felt the need to improve and expand my musical foundations and abilities to progress as a musician and teacher. Studying “Instrumental and Voice Pedagogy” at JAM Music Lab covers these needs and allows me to continue my musical activities while studying. Additionally, it is a good networking platform, as you meet musicians, which have their own projects, every day.
I took my guitar and came to Vienna 2 years ago to learn German and I didn't really have a plan what to do next. One day by a lucky opportunity I broke a string and while searching for a shop to get a new one I accidentally found the Jam Lab Conservatory for Jazz and Popular Music (it was still a conservatory at those times). That's exactly when my story as a professional musician started. It's been 2 years now and there's never been a day I regretted any hour I spent in Jam Lab. But it's not only me developing - so does the Jam Lab. Becoming a University this year Jam is seriously challenging the other music universities in Austria. As a big advantage, it's teachers are having individual approaches to every student which creates friendly relationships between a teacher and a student. Hopefully, this will stay as a good tradition. To conclude, I would say that I consider this tuition as an exciting journey which sets up expectations for the things to come.
